Material jetting is similar to inkjet document printing, but instead of jetting drops of ink onto paper, PolyJet 3D printers jet drops of liquid photopolymer onto the build tray.  Multiple print heads jet material simultaneously to create each layer, and UV light is then used to cure the layers.  These layers build up one at a time in an additive process to create a 3D model.  Fully cured models can be handled and used immediately without additional post-curing.  Along with the selected model materials, a gel-like support material facilitates successful printing of complicated geometries. HP (HPQ) is looking to disrupt the A3 copier market by targeting investments in this space. It has estimated the total available market (or TAM) at $55 billion in the printing space. The company aims to leverage its expertise, IP (intellectual property), and distribution channels to drive revenue in this space. It recently closed the acquisition of Samsung’s (SSNLF) printing business.

HP expects the 3D (three-dimensional) manufacturing space to provide ample opportunity for revenue growth. Management has defined growth in this vertical as the next industrial revolution and estimated TAM for 3D manufacturing at $12 trillion.

HP’s management has stated that the company is looking to be more than a platform player in 3D manufacturing and develop an open-materials ecosystem.
