PEI (Polyetherimide) sheets provide a 3D printing build surface that requires no tape, slurry, or adhesive. ABS and PLA both stick extremely well to the surface, which eliminates the need for support rafts used for better adhesion.

How to Use:

Cut the PEI sheet to size by scoring with a hobby knife. There are two methods to attaching the PEI to your print bed. The first method is to just clamp the sheet to the print bed using binder clips. We find that 2 on each side works great.The second method, get 3M 468MP Transfer Tape and use it to stick the PEI to the print bed.

Once the PEI sheet is attached, re-level your print bed and you are ready to go!

It helps to wipe the surface down with isopropyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, or soap in between prints. This will ensure the PEI is clean, and help adhesion. Light sanding with 5000 grit paper will also give the PEI sheet more life.

Kapton tape is the perfect accessory to cover your build platform during a 3D print. Kapton tape is made from a thin layer, 1 mil thick, of Polyimide film. The tape also has a 1 mil thick layer of silicone adhesive. Kapton tape is widely used because of it’s ability to withstand the heating and cooling of a build platform. Certain plastics such as ABS filament adhere particularly well to Kapton tape making it perfect to use when a heated build platform is required. ABS filament will have full adhesion to the Kapton tape at the high build plate temperature required, but it will also release the printed part when the bed cools. The print will be easy to peel or pop right off making Kapton tape the practical choice for any 3D printer build plate.

Dry Application
The dry method involves using a flat edge such as a ruler or a credit card to slowly peel and apply the tape while using the straight edge to keep the tape free from bubbles.

Wet Application
The wet method is similar to the dry method but involves spraying some soapy water underneath the Kapton tape. Remove the liquid by squeegee or a straight flat edge such as a ruler. This will also remove any air bubbles. The biggest benefit to the wet method is that you can re-position the tape while it is wet because the liquid allows you to easily slide the tape around. Let the Kapton tape fully dry before printing.

We provide the highest quality 3D printing materials such as ABS, PLA, HIPS, PVA, and more. Our filaments are run with tight tolerances. There are no air bubbles or oily residues. Every filament comes loaded on a durable, hard plastic spool, not a cheap, flimsy cardboard spool.

PVA is a water-soluble synthetic polymer. PVA dissolves quickly in water. It is the perfect filament to use as support material for it’s dissolvable properties. Generally, PVA is used in conjunction with PLA not ABS because it adheres well to PLA. The extrusion temperature difference can also be problematic with ABS. Importantly, PVA should not be allowed to sit at temperatures higher than 200 C for an extended period of time, known as pyrolysis. It will form jams which are extremely difficult to remove. Unlike PLA and ABS, you cannot remove the jam by increasing the temperature. Clearing the jam in the nozzle will often require it to be re-drilled or replaced altogether, so be careful!

Yes! Our spindle holes are large enough to fit the Makerbot printers. You don’t have to worry about fabricating a spindle extension any longer. *NOTE, these spools fit inside of the new Makerbot 5th generation printer drawers!

What are some printing tips?
Please use Kapton tape or 3M blue tape. Please use in well ventilated areas.

What are the printing temperatures for PVA?
Printing temperature range is ~170 C – 190 C. Please be sure to not let PVA sit at temperatures higher than 200 C for a period of time! This is very important to prevent pyrolysis which will jam and clog the nozzle!
