Dremel Idea Builder 3D printers gain powerful cloud capabilities thanks to 3DPrinterOS partnership

Feb 8, 2017 | By Benedict

Power tool and 3D printer manufacturer Dremel has partnered with 3DPrinterOS to provide a cloud-connected 3D printer platform for the Dremel line of Idea Builder 3D printers. 3DPrinterOS will replace the existing Dremel 3D Mobile Application.

The Dremel Idea Builder 3D20-01

Although primarily known as a manufacturer of power tools, Wisconsin-based Dremel has branched out into the 3D printing industry with its range of education-friendly Idea Builder 3D printers. Dremel, a Bosch Group brand, has now secured a partnership with 3DPrinterOS, a digital manufacturing cloud operating system company based in Silicon Valley, that will make its Idea Builder 3D printers much more convenient to operate and monitor.

By incorporating 3DPrinterOS into its 3D printing ecosystem, Dremel can now offer its 3D printing customers a host of new features, including the ability to prepare models and monitor print progress anytime with any device without the need to download software. Dremel adds that the new cloud capabilities will allow businesses and schools to manage unlimited numbers of printers and users without additional overhead.

“3DPrinterOS allows real-time central management of users, printers and files with any web browser in a universal solution,” said Dremel Education Head of Sales George Velez. “This partnership will enable our printers to be compatible with a variety of devices, including Chromebooks and iPads.”

3DPrinterOS currently powers over 120,000 devices in over 100 countries, and is one of the most popular 3D printing software platforms available. This is partially down to its high level of compatibility: 3DPrinterOS currently supports printing on over 100 brands of 3D printer. The cloud operating system will now allow districts and enterprises to easily deploy Dremel 3D printers across schools, districts, and other organizations.

“Dremel has created a line of world-class 3D printers, and we are pleased to have them as a partner,” said 3DPrinterOS President John Dogru. “Our vision is to further the 3D printing revolution, so users can print to a connected 3D printer anytime from anywhere in real-time. We want to unlock the power of digital manufacturing as Microsoft did for the PC.”

The 3DPrinterOS cloud-based 3D printing operating system

The 3DPrinterOS cloud system will replace the existing Dremel 3D Mobile Application currently used to power Idea Builder 3D printers.

Dremel currently produces four Idea Builder 3D printers: the 3D20-01, 3D20-03 EDU, 3D40-01, and 3D40-03 EDU. The “EDU” models are education-focused versions of the 3D20-01 and 3D40-01, and ship with curriculum-based lesson plans and other perks for educational institutions. Both 3D40 models contain a few more features than the 3D20 models, including Quik Level automatic bed leveling and active filament monitoring.

3DPrinterOS began collaborating with Microsoft Azure last year in order to expand its global presence.
