Surgeons used 3D printing to plan a kidney transplant between Brendan Clark and his son Dexter
British surgeons have become the first in the world to use 3D printing to plan the transplant of a man’s kidney into his son’s body by scanning both the kidney and the transplant site.
Dexter Clark, two, was born with severe kidney problems that left him able to eat only via a feeding tube. His father, Brendan, 36, a regional schemes manager for AXA, agreed to donate his kidney, but surgeons were concerned that the organ would not fit in to the child’s abdomen.
Doctors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in south London scanned Mr Clark’s kidney and his son’s abdomen and 3D printed both to see if the transplant was possible, and then the best way to insert it.
